Dota 2 continues to hold its position as a juggernaut in esports, boasting the highest overall prize pool collections in 2024. This achievement comes despite a notable shift in its competitive landscape: fewer active players and a smaller prize pool for its flagship event, The International. In previous years, TI was synonymous with breaking records, consistently featuring the largest prize pools in esports history. However, 2024 marks a turning point, with other tournaments and games beginning to rival or even surpass TI in terms of singular event prize pools. TI 2024 this year had only accumulated 2,776,566 USD, a significant drop compared to the previous years. Yet, the collective prize money offered across Dota 2's competitive ecosystem remains unmatched. This enduring dominance is largely attributed to Valve's crowdfunding model, where players contribute through in-game purchases like the Battle Pass. Although TI’s Battle Pass funding has dwindled due to changes in monetization strategies, regular Dota 2 tournaments throughout the year, organized by third-party entities and regional leagues, have stepped up with substantial prize contributions. Moreover, Dota 2's loyal community and its status as one of the most technically demanding MOBAs ensure its enduring relevance. Players and sponsors recognize its legacy, keeping the game alive as a premier competitive platform. While Dota 2 may not draw the massive player base of its early years or dominate headlines with TI alone, it remains a financial powerhouse, proving that a dedicated community and an enduring legacy can sustain a game at the pinnacle of esports prize pools.
